How Minecraft spiral staircases work

A spiral staircase is a ring of stairs that climbs one block per step. Seen from above, the ring is cut into wedges like a pie. Each level gets the next wedge, one block higher than the last, so you walk around and up at the same time.

For the stairs to be walkable, each wedge has to touch the one below it along a side, not just a corner. The generator fills the whole wedge between the pillar and the wall on every level, so there is always a full step to walk onto.

A stair block climbs toward the way it faces. When you place a stair, it faces the way you are looking. So stand on the step below and look along the direction of the arrow when you place each one.

The three parts of a spiral staircase

• The steps. Stair blocks, one wedge per level. At small sizes a wedge is one block; on wide stairs it is a row of blocks from the pillar to the wall.
• The outer wall. A ring the size of the diameter on every level. It turns the stairs into a tower and stops you falling. In the plan and the file it uses the plank or stone that matches the stairs.
• The centre pillar. A column in the middle, in logs or stone bricks. It is optional: without it you get an open stairwell you can look down.

Sizing guide

A 5-block stairwell only has a few free blocks inside the wall, so it cannot fit more than a handful of steps per turn. The tool uses the most it can and says so under the controls.

Steps per revolution

Steps per turn sets how steep the staircase is. With 8 steps, a full turn climbs 8 blocks and the wedges are wide. With 24 steps, a turn climbs 24 blocks and each step is a thin slice. Twelve is a comfortable middle.

You need two free blocks above each step to walk without bumping your head. The next step above the same spot is a full turn higher, so every setting here leaves plenty of room.

Block choices by build style

• Medieval tower: cobblestone or stone brick stairs, stone wall, no pillar.
• Cottage or treehouse: oak or spruce stairs with a log pillar.
• Desert build: sandstone stairs and walls.
• Nether fortress: nether brick stairs with a red nether brick pillar.

Common mistakes

• Placing stairs facing the wrong way. Look along the arrow when you place each stair, or use Litematica's Easy Place mode.
• Building the wall all at once. A tall finished wall makes the inside dark and hard to reach. Raise it a few levels ahead of the stairs.
• Placing a stair upside down. Clicking the top half of a block face flips the stair. Aim at the lower half.
• No light. Mobs spawn in dark stairwells. Put a torch or a lantern in the wall every few levels.
