For the Litematica mod: put the file in .minecraft/schematics, press M in game, then Load Schematics. The picture stands up as a wall one block thick. The copied link keeps the settings and sample, not your own image.
This Minecraft pixel art generator turns a logo, a portrait, a meme or a screenshot into a wall of coloured blocks. Choose a picture, a width and a palette, then build from the plan and the materials list, or download a PNG or a Litematica file. Everything runs in your browser; the image is never uploaded.
How to make pixel art in Minecraft
Minecraft pixel art works like a screen: each block is one pixel. The wall is your canvas, so a picture 64 pixels wide becomes a wall 64 blocks wide.
The hard part is colour. A photo can have millions of colours, but Minecraft only has a few dozen solid block colours. The generator shrinks your picture to the width you choose, then replaces every pixel with the block in your palette whose colour is closest. Block colours here are the average colour of each block's texture, so the plan looks like the finished wall.
Pictures with big flat areas, like logos, game sprites and cartoons, convert cleanly. Photos work too, but you will want dithering and a larger width.
Choosing a palette
- Wool (16 colours) is soft and a little fuzzy. Sheep drop it, so it is cheap on a farm.
- Concrete (16 colours) is bright and flat, the best choice for logos and anything seen from far away. You make it by letting concrete powder touch water.
- Terracotta (17 colours) has muted earth tones, good for faces, skin and landscapes. Badlands biomes have lots of it ready to mine.
- Full palette (65 blocks) combines the three with planks, stone, bricks, snow and quartz for the closest match. Expect a long shopping list.
Sizing your pixel art
| Width | Blocks for a square picture | In stacks of 64 |
|---|---|---|
| 16 | 256 | 4 stacks |
| 32 | 1,024 | 16 stacks |
| 48 | 2,304 | 36 stacks |
| 64 | 4,096 | 64 stacks |
| 96 | 9,216 | 144 stacks |
| 128 | 16,384 | 256 stacks |
16 to 32 blocks fits icons, mob faces and small logos, and takes under an hour. 48 to 64 is the sweet spot for characters and memes. 96 to 128 is for portraits and scenes, and needs scaffolding. Tall pictures are capped at 256 blocks high so they stay inside the build limit.
Building with the blueprint
- Gather the materials. The list under Stats shows every block and how many stacks you need.
- Mark the bottom row. The wall is built from the bottom up, so lay the lowest row first and check its length against the plan.
- Work row by row. Count along each row from the left. Turn on grid lines; every fifth line is darker, which makes counting easier.
- Mark what you place. Click blocks on the plan as you go. The Stats panel counts them, so you can stop and come back later.
- Check from a distance. Walk back every few rows. Mistakes that are invisible up close stand out from far away.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Too much detail for the width. Fine lines vanish when the picture shrinks. Crop tightly, or choose a wider size.
- Dithering a logo. It scatters specks through flat areas. Keep it for photos.
- Mixing up similar blocks. Light grey wool and light grey concrete look close in the inventory. Keep one chest per block type.
- Building it flipped. Build from where you will view it. The plan is drawn as seen from the front.
- Gravity blocks. Concrete powder, sand and gravel fall. Convert the powder to concrete first, and use the full palette's sandstone rather than sand.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make pixel art in Minecraft?
Choose a picture, pick a width and a palette, and the generator swaps every pixel for the block with the closest colour. Build the result as a wall, one row at a time, from the materials list.
Which blocks are best for Minecraft pixel art?
Concrete for bright, flat colours; wool if you farm sheep; terracotta for skin tones and soft shading. The full palette mixes all of them with planks and stone for the closest match.
What size should my Minecraft pixel art be?
32 to 64 blocks wide suits most pictures. A square picture 64 blocks wide takes 4,096 blocks; at 128 it takes 16,384.
Is dithering better?
For photos and smooth gradients, yes: it mixes nearby colours in a pattern so the shading survives. For logos and cartoons, leave it off to keep flat areas clean.
How do I actually build the pixel art in-game?
Stand the wall up from the bottom row. Keep the plan open on a second screen, count along each row and click the blocks on the plan as you place them. With Litematica, the ghost image shows every block in place.
Does this work with photos?
Yes, but simple pictures with big areas of colour come out best. Crop the photo tightly and turn dithering on.
Do I need any mods?
No. The plan and the PNG work in plain Minecraft. The .litematic file is for the Litematica mod, which shows a ghost of the build in your world.
