How to build an oval in Minecraft
An oval is a circle stretched along one axis. Along the long sides the curve is gentle, with long straight runs of blocks; at the ends it turns tightly, with short steps. Getting those two parts right is what makes it read as an oval and not as a rounded rectangle.
The orange lines on the plan are the long and the short axis. They cross at the centre, and the oval is a mirror image across both of them.
The ratio between width and height sets the character of the shape. Close to 1:1 it is almost a circle; around 2:1 it reads as a stadium; past 3:1 it becomes a long track with straight sides. Try a few sizes with the sliders before you commit.
Step-by-step oval building guide
- Set the size. Enter the width and the height. For a stadium, start at about twice as wide as it is tall.
- Mark the centre and both axes. Put a marker block at the centre and run a temporary line of blocks along each axis.
- Place the four ends. Walk out along each axis to the outermost block and place it.
- Fill one quarter. Copy the steps from one end to the next, row by row. Click blocks on the plan after you place them.
- Mirror it. Copy the quarter to the other three sides, then remove the axis lines.
Creative uses for ovals
- Stadiums and arenas: a thick oval wall with a filled oval floor, and rows of stairs stepping up for seats.
- Ponds and lakes: a filled oval dug one or two blocks deep looks more natural than a round pool.
- Racetracks: two ovals, one inside the other, with ice or packed ice for boat racing.
- Windows and doorways: a tall, narrow oval in the wall of a church or a tower.
- Flower beds and plazas: a filled oval of grass or a path block in the middle of a square.
Tips for oval builds
Odd widths and heights keep the oval perfectly symmetric, with one centre block. Even sizes work too but put the centre between blocks.
To fit an oval inside a rectangular plot, set the width and height to the size of the plot. The oval touches the middle of each side, and the four corners stay free for paths, trees or lamps.
Very flat ovals, where the height is under a third of the width, get long straight sides. That suits a racetrack but looks odd for a pond; bring the two numbers closer for a softer shape. For walls that fences or glass panes must follow, use the thick style so every block joins the next along a side.
