Minecraft Stack Calculator
This Minecraft stack calculator answers how many stacks, shulker boxes and double chests your build needs. For example, 1,000 items are 15 stacks + 40; a double chest of full shulker boxes holds 93,312 items. Enter loose items, full stacks or containers in any box and the total updates immediately.
Type what you have or what you want in any box: the total is loose items + stacks + full shulker boxes + full double chests.
1,000 items = 15 stacks + 40
- Total items
- 1,000
- Stacks
- 15 stacks + 40
- Slots used
- 16
- Shulker boxes
- 1
- Double chests
- 1
- Chests of boxes
- 1
A part-filled stack still takes a whole slot, so the slots, shulker boxes and chests are rounded up. A shulker box holds 27 stacks and a double chest 54; a double chest of shulker boxes holds 54 boxes.

How to use
- Pick a stack size.
- Type an amount in any box.
- Copy the result, or copy the link.
Material lists are easiest to read as blocks, but easiest to carry as stacks and shulker boxes. This calculator accepts both directions: start with an item count to plan a resource run, or enter the full stacks, shulker boxes and double chests you already have to see the total they represent.
How the Minecraft stack calculator works
Divide the item count by the stack size and keep the remainder. A full stack is 64 for most blocks, but Minecraft also has items that stack to 16 and items that do not stack at all. Enter 64, 16 or 1 in the Stack size rail. The calculator rounds a decimal input to a whole item and keeps the remainder visible, so 65 blocks reads as one stack plus one rather than two full stacks.
Slots are not the same as items. A partial stack still takes one inventory slot, which is why 65 items use two slots. The calculator carries that distinction into shulker boxes and chests: it rounds slots up to 27 slots per shulker box and 54 slots per double chest. That makes the answer useful for a real trip, not just a division exercise.
How many shulker boxes do I need?
A shulker box has 27 inventory slots. With 64-item stacks, a full box holds 1,728 items; with 16-item stacks it holds 432; with non-stackable items it holds 27. The calculator reports both boxes needed and the number of full boxes, so a total just over 27 stacks asks for two boxes even though the second is only partly filled. The same rule applies to double chests: 54 slots, rounded up.
The Chests of boxes result answers a different question. It tells you how many double chests are needed to carry the shulker boxes themselves, 54 boxes per double chest. A double chest of full 64-item shulker boxes holds 93,312 items. This is the number to use when planning a large quarry, a city wall or a bulk smelting run.
Reverse stack calculation
Use the four input boxes in either direction. Put loose items in Items, then add the number of full stacks, full shulker boxes and full double chests you already own. The total is the sum of all four: loose items + stacks × stack size + shulker boxes × 27 × stack size + double chests × 54 × stack size. Changing the stack-size radio instantly recalculates every container because a full box holds slots, not a fixed number of blocks.
Quick amounts are shortcuts for common counts. A link from a building page arrives with ?n= already filled, so a lighthouse or tower material list can flow straight into this page. The URL keeps the settings, which makes a shopping-list link easy to share with a teammate. Invalid or negative values are clamped safely and the page tells you when an input is not a whole number.

What is a stack in Minecraft?
A stack is a group of identical items that share one inventory slot. Most blocks and items stack up to 64. Some stack to only 16, such as ender pearls, snowballs, eggs, buckets and signs. Others cannot be stacked at all: tools, armour, potions and shulker boxes take one slot for every item. In the Java 1.20.1 item list, 1,032 items stack to 64, 45 stack to 16 and 177 do not stack. The table groups the items by stack size and shows a few familiar ones from each group.
| Stack size | Items | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 64 | 1,032 | Stone, Cobblestone, Oak Planks, Oak Log, Dirt, Glass, Torch, Coal, Iron Ingot, Diamond |
| 16 | 45 | Ender Pearl, Snowball, Egg, Bucket, Oak Sign, Honey Bottle, Armor Stand, White Banner, Written Book |
| 1 | 177 | Diamond Sword, Diamond Pickaxe, Iron Chestplate, Shield, Elytra, Totem of Undying, Potion, White Bed, Cake, Shulker Box |
Counted from the item list of Minecraft Java 1.20.1; air is not counted. To plan for one of these groups, choose 64, 16 or 1 under Stack size in the calculator above.
Using the calculator for Minecraft builds
First copy the total blocks from the tool's Stats panel. Open Stack calculator beside the game, choose the correct stack limit and check the shulker count. Add a buffer only when you have a reason: stairs, slabs and decorative blocks may be listed separately, while the structural plan counts full blocks. For a communal storage room, use the double-chest result to choose the number of labelled chests before you start mining.
For non-stackable items such as tools and armour, select a stack size of one. The arithmetic is then slots directly: 27 items per shulker and 54 per double chest. For ender pearls, snowballs and eggs, select 16. For blocks, choose 64. These presets match the normal Minecraft limits, but the calculator is deliberately general enough for any item count.
Stack calculator examples
- 64 blocks: one stack, one slot, one shulker box and one double chest.
- 1,000 blocks: 15 stacks + 40, sixteen slots, one shulker box and one double chest.
- 1,728 blocks: 27 stacks, 27 slots and one full shulker box.
- 93,312 blocks: 1,458 stacks, 1,458 slots, 54 full shulker boxes and one double chest of shulker boxes.
The table is generated by the same pure function as the live page, so it is a reference rather than a second calculator. If you need an unusual amount, type it into the input or follow a deep link from a generator. Copy result puts the item total, stack line, slots and container counts on your clipboard for a build note.
How to split and drop stacks
These are the default controls in Minecraft Java Edition:
- Right-click a stack to pick up half of it, then click an empty slot to set that half down.
- Shift + left-click a stack to move the whole stack to the other inventory, for example from your pockets into a chest.
- Q drops one item from the stack you are pointing at or holding.
- Ctrl + Q drops the whole stack.
Splitting is a quick way to count out a number of blocks: half of a 64-stack is 32, and the calculator above turns the total into stacks, shulker boxes and chests.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Minecraft stack calculator handle 1,000 items?
With a 64-item stack size, 1,000 items are 15 stacks + 40. The calculator also shows the 16 slots, one shulker box and one double chest needed to hold them.
How many items fit in a shulker box?
A shulker box has 27 slots. It holds 1,728 items when the item stacks to 64, 432 when it stacks to 16 and 27 non-stackable items.
How many shulker boxes fit in a double chest?
A double chest has 54 slots, so it holds 54 shulker boxes. With full 64-item stacks inside them that is 93,312 items.
What stack sizes does the calculator support?
It supports 64, 16 and 1. Use 64 for most blocks, 16 for items such as ender pearls and snowballs, and 1 for tools, armour and other non-stackable items.
Can I calculate backwards from shulker boxes?
Yes. Enter full stacks, full shulker boxes and full double chests in their boxes. The calculator multiplies each container by its slots and the selected stack size, then adds loose items.
Why are slots higher than stacks?
A partial stack still occupies a slot. For example, 65 blocks are one full stack plus one item, which takes two slots and may require a second shulker box if the first box was full.
Do building pages link to the stack calculator?
Yes. The Stack calculator link beside a tool's total carries that number in the n parameter, so a lighthouse, tower or other generator can hand its material total to this page.
