Minecraft Cone Generator

A hollow Minecraft cone roof 15 blocks across and 15 layers tall takes 302 blocks, or 919 solid. This cone generator plans pointed tower roofs and spires from the base ring to the tip, with the block count for every layer and an optional 1-block overhang. Works for Java and Bedrock.

This Minecraft cone generator draws a pointed roof as flat rings. Enter the tower's diameter and the roof's height, then step from the wide base ring to the tip, with the block count for every layer.

How to build a cone roof in Minecraft

A cone roof is a stack of circles that shrink by the same amount on every layer, from the full width of the tower at the base to a single block at the tip, or 2 × 2 on even sizes. The steady step is what makes it read as a cone and not a dome, which shrinks slowly at first and quickly at the top.

The height sets the look. A roof as tall as the tower is wide gives the classic wizard-tower spire; half that height gives a squat roof for a round house or a windmill. Past about twice the width the roof turns into a needle, which suits a church spire.

Every layer stays centred on the tower. In the hollow style the plan also closes every gap you could see through from above: where a ring steps in by more than one block, the ring below it gets wider, so the roof stays sealed.

Step-by-step cone roof guide

  1. Measure the tower. Enter the outside diameter of the tower wall. Turn on Overhang for a roof one block wider on every side, so its edge hangs over the wall.
  2. Pick the height. Start with the same number as the diameter, then compare other heights in the 3D view.
  3. Lay the base ring. Build layer 1 on top of the wall. The orange lines cross over the centre of the tower on every layer.
  4. Go up one ring at a time. Press → or drag the slider and copy each ring. The layer below shows as a hatched ghost, so you can see how far each ring steps in.
  5. Close the tip. The last layer is a single block, or 2 × 2 on even sizes. Top it with a lightning rod, an end rod or a flag.

Cone roof ideas

  • Wizard towers with a tall, steep spire in dark prismarine, deepslate tiles or purple terracotta.
  • Castle turrets with a roof that hangs one block over the wall.
  • Round houses and yurts with a low roof about half as tall as it is wide.
  • Church spires and lighthouses with a thin roof two or three times taller than the tower is wide.
  • Tents and teepees in wool, standing straight on the ground.

Tips for better cone roofs

Choose a stair block under Stairs on the steps in the tools tray: the outer block of every step becomes a stair, which smooths the slope. The arrows on the plan point to each stair's tall side, and the .litematic file sets every stair the right way round.

For a two-tone roof, switch blocks every two or three layers, or build the base ring in a darker block as a trim. Odd diameters end in a single-block tip; even ones end in a 2 × 2, which leaves room for a flagpole in the middle.

Block counts for common sizes

Every roof below is as tall as it is wide. The last column adds a 1-block overhang, so the roof is 2 blocks wider than the tower.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a cone roof in Minecraft?

Build the base ring on top of the tower wall, then add one smaller ring per layer until you reach the tip. The layer slider shows every ring from the base up with its block count, and the ghost of the layer below shows how far to step in.

How tall should a cone roof be?

About as tall as the tower is wide for a classic pointed roof: a 15-block tower with a 15-layer roof takes 302 blocks, hollow. Use half the width for a low roof, and two or three times the width for a spire.

How many blocks does a cone roof need?

A hollow cone 15 blocks across and 15 layers tall takes 302 blocks, or 365 with a 1-block overhang. A solid one takes 919. The Stats panel gives the exact total and the number of stacks for any size up to 256.

What is the difference between a cone and a dome?

A cone shrinks by the same amount on every layer, so its sides are straight and it ends in a point. A dome is the top half of a sphere: it shrinks slowly at the base and quickly at the top. Use the dome generator for rounded roofs.

Can the roof hang over the wall?

Yes. Turn on Overhang and enter the tower's diameter: the roof base becomes 2 blocks wider, so it sticks out one block on every side. The Stats panel shows the roof's base diameter.

Is the hollow cone sealed?

Yes. Every block touches the next one along a face, and where a ring steps in by more than one block the ring below gets wider, so there is no gap to see or fall through from above. The base is left open, because the roof sits on the tower walls.
